Bass Car Rental
About the agency
Bass Car Rental is an independent, Anguillian-owned operation with more than 20 years serving visitors and residents, working out of The Farrington in The Valley, about five minutes from Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport. Free delivery and collection are included at both the airport and the Blowing Point ferry terminal, which is a shorter sentence than it deserves: most operators on this island are set up for one arrival point or the other, and the mismatch between where a car is and where a visitor actually lands is the single most common thing that goes wrong here. Bass covers both at no charge. The pricing, which is the thing to understand first. Bass quotes rates with the 13% GST already included. Almost nobody else on the island does. That means Bass looks more expensive than it is on any comparison that lines its numbers up against the pre-tax rates everyone else publishes, and it means the Bass number is the number you actually pay. Their entry compact at $50.85 is $45 before tax. The Toyota Corolla at $67.80 is $60. The four-door soft top Wrangler at $107.35 is $95. The honest comparison. Even corrected to a like-for-like basis, Bass is not the cheapest on the island. The entry car is $45 against Island Car Rental at $30, and the Corolla is $60 against $45. It lands almost exactly level with Avis, whose $45 entry rate becomes $50.85 once GST is applied, which is the same figure Bass prints on the page. What the difference buys you is free delivery to whichever terminal you arrive at, a genuine choice of drive side, a published insurance figure rather than a surprise at the counter, and a quote you can trust. Bass also states outright that rates are negotiable and that special pricing is available subject to availability. That is an unusual thing to say in public and it is worth taking them up on for a long rental or a quiet week. The fleet. Seventeen vehicles across compact and economy cars, intermediate sedans, compact and midsize SUVs, seven-passenger SUVs, Jeep Wranglers in three configurations, and minivans and minibuses from seven up to twelve seats. That is the second-widest selection in this directory, and the twelve-seat minibus is one of the largest vehicles available anywhere on the island. Everything in the fleet is automatic. Drive side, which nobody else discusses. Bass offers both left and right hand drive. Anguilla drives on the left under British road rules, so a right hand drive car puts you in the correct position for the road, and visitors who have driven one here consistently say it made the left-side driving click faster. Some operators run almost entirely left hand drive stock, which means sitting on the wrong side while driving on the left. Bass lets you choose. Ask when you book, because it shapes the whole week and it costs nothing to specify. What is not included. Fuel is not included, which is standard. Tyre repairs are not included, which is less standard and worth registering: the tracks out to Junks Hole, Captains Bay and the quieter east end are rough enough that a puncture is a real possibility, and here it is on you. The optional Collision Damage Waiver is $8 a day, published, which is more than most operators here will tell you before you are standing at the counter. Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted.
